Prison Ministry Opportunities

Prison ministry is often a neglected, or heavily avoided, subject in most churches. Some churches have taken a lead in ministering to this marginalized group. There are a few non profit organizations that minister to prisoners as well.

In many churches, prison ministry is way down the list of priorities. As we enter the holiday season, prison ministry becomes even more critical. Loneliness and depression are some of the biggest issues prisoners feel during the holiday season.

Dover Baptist Association is affiliated with several prison ministries in the Richmond area. Good News Jail & Prison Ministry is one of the organizations Dover supports. Good News serves the Richmond area, and has numerous supporters. Good News recently held  prayer breakfast in Glen Allen to raise awareness for prison ministry.

The stigma of being an "ex con" remains with a person for the rest of their life. Many prison chaplains, and counselors, work with inmates to prepare them to face this stigma. Boosting their self-esteem is one tactic, and another tactic is looking for jobs in a "ex-con" friendly database. Some employers work well with ex-cons, and provide an opportunity to regain their dignity.

If your church is interested in starting or enhancing its prison ministry, contact the Dover office for more details.
