Dover ESL

The primary goal of church-based ESL ministries is to intentionally share and demonstrate the gospel of Jesus Christ as we help people learn to speak English.
Nov2010 ESL participants

Goals

  • Encourage relationships with internationals from all people groups
  • Conduct 15-hour workshops to train volunteers to teach ESL
  • Equip individuals and churches with skills to start ESL ministries
  • Provide support and additional training for individuals and churches with ongoing ESL ministries

Here are some things you will learn

  • How to start an ESL ministry at your church or in your community
  • How to plan a lesson
  • How to teach immigrants survival skills  (filling out forms, answering the telephone, talking to the doctor, etc.)
  • How to teach Bible stories simply
  • How to begin understanding cultural differences
  • How to share your faith without using church jargon

These workshops train volunteers in churches to begin ESL programs and/or teach English as a Second Language (ESL). It is not accepted by public schools for certification, but many public school teachers have found the training to be helpful.

The cost, which covers a textbook, is $25 for the February and November workshops, and $30 (includes a continental breakfast on Saturday) for the August workshop. Participants must attend all of one 15 hour session to receive a certificate from the North American Mission Board. This certificate has also been accepted by other countries for VISA applications.

If you have any questions, you may email Jennifer Chrisman at Jennifer.dover.esl@verizon.net. To register, call Dover Baptist Association at (804) 550-1980. In the event less than 5 individuals have signed up two weeks prior, a workshop may be cancelled.
